His name is Ihara Saikaku, and he was a 17th century Japanese writer known for taking risks in his works. Ihara Saikaku was born Hirayama Togo in Osaka in 1642, and little is known about his early life. Despite sketchy personal details, Saikaku's reputation as a novelist, poet and playwright who was the toast of Genroku-era Osaka is unquestionable.
