          Frenchman C Hopffer patents the fire extinguisher

          On this day in 1722, the first automatic fire extinguisher was patented in England by a chemist, French C. Hopffer. It consisted of a cask of fire-extinguishing liquid which had a pewter chamber of gunpowder.

          This was connected with a system of fuses which were ignited, exploding the gunpowder and scattering the solution. Before this time, if a fire broke out, people would have to fetch water in a bucket to quench it.
