Frenchman C Hopffer patents the fire extinguisher
On this day in 1722, the first automatic fire extinguisher was patented in England by a chemist, French C. Hopffer. It consisted of a cask of fire-extinguishing liquid which had a pewter chamber of gunpowder.
This was connected with a system of fuses which were ignited, exploding the gunpowder and scattering the solution. Before this time, if a fire broke out, people would have to fetch water in a bucket to quench it.

Adopted in 1936, the M1 became the first standard-issue autoloading infantry rifle in the world.
